Information about Dungavel, near Strathaven.Documents held in filing cabinet folder.Also known as Dungavel Castle or Dungavel House, the building was originally a 19th-century hunting lodge, and summer retreat of the Dukes of Hamilton. It was the home of the Duke from 1919 and was the planned destination for Rudolf Hess's doomed 1941 peace mission. The thirteenth Duke of Hamilton is buried there. Dungavel was sold to the National Coal Board in 1947, and as their Scottish Division and then acquired by the government to use an open prison. In 2001 it became a centre for holding asylum seekers whose applications have been refused prior to their removal. It is situated near the town of Strathaven, in South Lanarkshire.
