Frank Ruby, a former confederate soldier, arrives in the Yankee town of Watts Ridge and immediately experiences hatred and bigotry. The next day, he is followed by an embittered man, Jed Hanson, whose wife had been raped and murdered by marauding rebels. The planned bushwhack doesn't reach its intended conclusion as Ruby shows the man mercy and lets him live. Yancey Clark, a disgraced Confederate soldier, drummed out for putting his own career above the lives of the men he commanded, had led the raiding party which murdered Ethel Hanson. Now, under the guise of not accepting Lee's surrender, Clark continues to raid and plunder. In his struggle for justice, Ruby must follow a dangerous trail and his life is constantly on the line. It is all destined to end in a bloody confrontation in the streets of Watts Ridge.
