Many guidebooks cover the Somme offensive in 1916, the five-month struggle that has come to be seen as one of the defining episodes in the history of the fighting on the Western Front during the First World War. But no previous guide has concentrated on 1 July 1916 – the opening day of the Battle of Somme. "Each of the eleven routes we have chosen between Gommecourt in the north and Montauban in the south provides the battlefield visitor with the opportunity to walk or bike the ground that was fought over on that fateful first day. Linking each route is a ‘spine route’ which can be either cycled or driven and, as far as is possible, follows the British front line. By completing each of the eleven routes and following the connecting ‘spine’, the battlefield tourist is able to cover the whole of the British sector from Gommecourt to Maricourt." -From the Introduction
